How to source hard-to-find electronic components during shortages

While shortages may be unavoidable, companies can reduce risk through proactive sourcing strategies, supplier diversification, and stronger supply chain partnerships.

Electronic component shortages have become an ongoing reality rather than a temporary disruption. From memory devices to legacy semiconductors, procurement teams worldwide are navigating constrained supply, extended lead times, and increasing competition for inventory.

  • AI, hyperscale, and EV demand: Capacity that once served diversified end markets is increasingly being earmarked for data center and AI infrastructure buildouts. The result is greater competition among buyers outside these categories for a dwindling slice of fab output.  
  • Memory allocation: With DRAM and NAND suppliers prioritizing HBM and higher-margin products, legacy memory is being pushed further into allocation-only territory. Moreover, some legacy components vital to high-reliability industries are being phased out to make room for next-gen capacity.  
  • Extended manufacturing lead times: Expanding capacity with new fabs and production lines takes years. Though manufacturers are racing to catch up with surging demand, getting there will take time. Right now, lead times are stretching as the market waits for new capacity to come online.  
  • Geopolitical exposure: Trade friction and regional conflicts continue to affect raw material flows. Helium, tungsten, and rare earths have all been affected in recent months, and rising input costs feed directly into component pricing and availability.  
  • Supplier concentration: Many categories, particularly memory, depend on a small number of manufacturers clustered in specific regions. This exposure amplifies the fallout of what would otherwise be isolated disruptions.  

Notably, by the time a component appears on a shortage list, the inventory that may have solved the problem is usually already gone. Overcoming this timing gap is a central challenge to semiconductor sourcing strategies today.  

Shortages affect more than procurement

Component shortages rarely stay contained to the purchasing department. Unavailability moves downstream quickly, and the longer it goes unaddressed, the more damage compounds. Throughout an organization, shortages can ripple into:  

  • Production delays: Manufacturing schedules stall when a critical part isn’t on hand, regardless of how well everything else on the BOM is sourced.
